LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV senior wide receiver Ricky White III is one of just 80 players included on the 2024 Maxwell Award Watch List, released Monday by the Maxwell Football Club in Philadelphia.
The Maxwell Award is presented at the end of every season to college football's overall player of the year and named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, a former standout at Swarthmore College, renowned sportswriter and football official.
White III (Marietta, GA) is just the third Rebel player to earn a spot on the Maxwell preseason list in the last decade and the first since running back Charles Williams in 2020. He is also the first UNLV receiver to be recognized by the award since Devante Davis in 2014.
White III, who was named 2024 Preseason Second Team All-America by Walter Camp, Phil Steele and Athlon Sports, is college football's leading returning receiver after finishing with a school-record 1,483 yards last fall. He also tied the UNLV mark for receptions in a season with 88 and became the first Rebel ever to post five consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 12 while the three finalists will be unveiled November 26. The winner of the 88th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards on March 14, 2025, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. from the University of Washington was the 2023 Maxwell Award winner before being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
Under the direction of 2023 Mountain West Coach of the Year Barry Odom, White III and the Rebels will kick off their 57th season of football on August 31 by heading to Big 12 Conference member Houston at 4 p.m. PT on FS1 in the first of a school-record 11 national TV games. The home opener comes one week later when Utah Tech comes to Allegiant Stadium for a noon kickoff on September 7.
